              Abstract

Pesticide use among farmers causes the impacts to environment and health. An area in
the northern highlands was selected for study sites for the impact assessment of pesticide
utilizations. Risk matrix is a tool to scope the type of pesticide and its biomarker of exposure.

Questionnaire was the initial assessment tool for scoping the group and type of pesticide use.
Herbicide showed the major group of pesticides (3 of 4) and glyphosate, metsulfuron-methyl and
paraquat were the most pesticides often sprayed, respectively. The impact of most three herbicides
was calculated by using risk matrix resulted from multiplication of hazard score and exposure score.
Paraquat showed the highest risk score resulting from its most toxic compound compared to higher
ranking chemicals, glyphosate and metsulfuron-methyl. Results from the assessment using risk matrix

could be determined for further health surveillance program in the study area.
