                                                                                                                                              1. The ecology of Teluk Patani

                                                                                                                                                    ‘Teluk Patani’ is a Melayu name – ‘Teluk’ meaning bay and ‘Pata’ - beach.
                                                                                                                                              Also known as “Pattani Bay” the local fishermen describe it as an area that extends
                                                                                                                                              from the coast of Thepha district of Songkhla province, through Nong Chik, Yaring
                                                                                                                                              districts to Tachie Cape of Pattani. It covers the outer sea, called ‘laut luar’, inner
                                                สารบัญ                                                                                        sea or ‘laut dalam’ and mangrove forests. The area features piles of submerged

                                                                                                                                              rocks and coral reefs – real and artificial, all along the coastline with marine ridges
                                                                                                                                              in the middle of the sea.
                                                                                                                                                    Pattani Bay features mudflats and mangrove forests with a mix of fresh,
                                                                                                                                              saline and brackish water. The estuaries that lead to the western side of the bay

                                                                                                                                              canal, ‘Sai Moh’, ‘Bangtawa’ canal, ‘Bang Plamoh’ canal, and Pattani estuaries.

                                                                                                                                              rai ‘Tu Yung’ canal and ‘Bangpu’ mangrove forests which are natural fish nurseries.

                                                33   เกษตรกรรมเทพา                                                                            The sediments carried by these estuaries contribute to the natural abundance and
                                                                                                                                              rich biodiversity of the region. There are plentiful of agarophyte and seagrass –
                                                                                                                                              especially Halophila ovalis, a favourite food of the Dugongs. Pattani Bay wetlands

                                                                                                                                              are therefore rich in natural resources, an important nesting habitat for different
                                                                                                                                              species and a suitable area for small scale fisheries and an important local fishing

                                                       โดยชุมชน                                                                                     The majority of the local fishing communities around Teluk Patani are Muslim.
                                                                                                                                              In 1992 widespread use of push nets and trawlers caused a drastic decrease in
